WACK
Wait before Acknowledge.
WAN
Wide Area Network - a type of communications network that utilizes
local area telephone lines to connect dispersed sites.
Wander
The long term variations of the significant instants of a digital
signal from their ideal positions in time. The phrase "long term"
implies that these variations are of low frequency, less than 10Hz.
WAP
Wireless Application Protocol.
WATM
Wireless ATM - A technology for interfacing and/or combining
wireless and ATM networks.
WATS
Wide Area Telephone Service.
WATOMIC
An uninterruptable Write operation.
Waveform
Shape of the wave formed when the instantaneous values of an
alternating signal are plotted against time.
Waveguide
A special type of conductor, in the form of a tube, used to transfer
microwave radiation in a contained manner from one point to another.
Wavelength
Distance between successive peaks of a sinusoidal wave.
WCDMA
Wideband Code Division Multiple Access.
W-DCS
Wideband digital cross-connect.
WDM
Wavelength Division Multiplexing - A technique used in fiber optics
which utilizes different optical frequencies for concurrent parallel
data streams.
WDMAON
WDM all optic fiber networks.
wDSL
Wavelet Digital Subscriber Line - wDSL offers significant
improvements in digital bandwidth/carrier performance for existing
copper telephone lines. wDSL is Aware’s symmetric digital subscriber
line technology. Symmetric digital services are chosen for
applications where both upstream and downstream capacities are
equally critical to the end user.

Weighting Filters
Several different filters have been used to represent the
transmission pass-band characteristics of different communication
networks. The two most frequently used are C-message (N.A) and
Psophometric (Europe) weighting filters.
Wet-T1
A T1 circuit with a telephone company powered interface.
Wide area connection
Connection between individual LANs when the LANs are connected by
wide area links (links provided by carriers). These links include
point-to-point links or switching-network based links, also referred
to as "cloud" links.
Wideband
i. The same as broadband. ii. A signal or channel whose frequency
characteristics are broader than that normally considered to be
voice grade. Frequencies from 4000 hertz up are considered to be in
the wideband range.
Wireless IP
The packet data protocol standard for sending wireless data over the
Internet.
Wireless LAN
With a wireless LAN, a mobile user or multiple users can connect to
a local area network (LAN) through a radio connection. Distance and
the speed of the access are considerations with wireless technology.
Wireless technologies for LAN connection include spread spectrum,
microwave, and infrared light. A new standard, IEEE P802.11, is
expected to allow the various types to work together, whereas right
now they each operate independently
